Did You Know That Your Computer Can Give You A Pain in the Neck?

By Dr. Michael Weir

When you have seen as many patients as I have in my years as a Bellevue chiropractor you begin to see patterns in the way that certain peoples body's present. Did you know that women who wear high heels will most likely have back pain at some point in their lives? A big one that I see are people with computer jobs. Sitting at a computer all day in a poor posture with create dysfunction in the neck. Here in Bellevue WA I see many people with computer jobs, that all have the same kind of neck. I call these necks "Bellevue Necks".

So why do these people with computer jobs all have similar looking necks? Sitting at a computer causes the head and neck to tip forward, and then jut forward. If you keep the head and neck in this posture for long enough it will get stuck there. This is a bad thing.

My post doctorate study's are in chiropractic neurology through the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies. In neurological text we call this bending "plasticity". Now the good news is that "plasticity" goes both ways. In the negative, getting stuck out of position. In the positive, being able to make changes back to the correct position.

Bellevue neck is when the head drifts too far forward over the shoulders and normal curve in the neck is lost. This is bad, because it causes undue stress to the entire body, and over time can actually create pain and discomfort.

I work with patients on a daily basis who's neck pain, mid back pain, headaches, tmj, and so on, are due to their "Bellevue Neck". The key is to reverse the damages done and then prevent them from happening again. Chiropractic care is the best suited form of treatment for cases of Bellevue neck, and specific exercises are important to keep your spine in place.
