Samsung Galaxy Note versus iPhone: Who will win the battle?

By Jasons Rozentsweig

There has been a long discussion whether Android phones can ever be as attractive to customers as an iconic iPhone. The war between the two classes is going for a few years by now: Apple just released iPhone 4S and will probably go for a new iPhone 5 on WWDC 2012 in San Francisco.

What about the army of Android phones? On the one hand, HTC, Samsung and others sell more non-Apple devices. Unlike high-end iPhones that are all quite pricey Android phones are very heterogeneous with various features. This market segmentation with some Android phones selling at less than 300 dollars prevents them from outperforming in dollar terms Apple.

Samsung Galaxy Note leads the army of Android phones because it has a number of interesting features. This phone is equipped with 5.3 Gorilla glass screen which make it look like a tiny tablet PC rather than a smart phone. Many customers who cannot put the device in the pocket think that a huge screen in a smart phone is rather a flaw rather than advantage of Samsung Galaxy Note.

Some iPhone users also do not like the idea of stylus that can be used to puch buttons, send messages and sketch notes. Galaxy battery will allow sending messages, surfing the web and talking over the phone for up to two days of active use.

However, unlike other phones the customer has to remove the battery first before changing the memory card. TouchWiz 4.0 is placed on the top of the Android 2.3.5 OS and includes large Widgets and 5 icons on the bottom of the screen. There are up to seven desktops that are supported and some Widgets can be adjusted to customer preferences.

Samsung but is a bit larger due to a bigger screen. A popular resource dpk.com.ua considered a model that costs 850 dollars and operates by Gingerbread version of Android platform. It has Samsung own processor Exynos and Mali 400-MP accelerates unconverted video.

Super AMOLED display shows a remarkable 1280 by 800 resolution but, photos look greenish on Galaxy Note that can be attributed to PenTile technology.

Handwriting opportunity with the help of stylus is one of the major marketing advantages of the device. Indeed, stylus allows making quick notes and character recognition is also quite good. User can also enter text using a keyboard that is especially convenient in the horizontal screen mode.

Dock station is an interesting concept for this half-tablet and half-Smartphone device. It has a built-in speaker for a more loud sound. Additional features of the smart phone include full HD video, Wi-Fi direct, S Memo, voice operation among other things.

It seems that Samsung can bite off some Apple market share because Note is comparable to iPhone in terms of customer appeal and features in Android phones vs iPhone battle. Our preference, however, would be a power full laptop for about the same price because we are not sure whether Samsung Galaxy functionality matches its price.
