5 Ideas That Will Make You Think About Cartridges

By Walter Buker

Toner cartridges allow a laser printer to work. Toner cartridges are what actually prints the ink on the paper. There are many parts to a laser printer toner cartridge. Ink goes on the paper through an electrostatic charged drum unit and is stuck to the paper by some heated rollers. Most printers consist of two consumable parts which are the a drum unit and a toner cartridge. There are many other printers that include the drum unit in its toner cartridge. In these printers, every time that the toner cartridge needs to be replaced, the drum unit must be replaced as well. Many people prefer printers that only require the toner cartridge to be changed due to cost and time restrictions.

There are many manufacturers of many types of toner cartridges. OEM toner cartridges are the genuine cartridges made by the original manufacturer. Guarantees on not only the toner cartridge, but the laser printer as well are given with OEM toner cartridges, but not cheaper off brands. There are cheaper toner cartridges to choose from, such as: refills, off brands, or re-manufactured cartridges, but OEM is usually the best and safest to use. OEM toner cartridges can be bought cheaper at special retailers. Off-brand or compatible toner cartridges are sometimes called generic because they are manufactured by third party corporations and named differently. These generic cartridges must have a different appearance because of the US patent laws. Being drastically cheaper than OEM brands, compatible toner cartridges can tempt buyers, but it should be known that these brands are said to be less reliable by some.

There is a specific particle size needed for toner and this is typically acquired through air jet milling. Often times air jet milling doesn't lead to consistent uniform sized particles. Since air jet milling is not good enough for some companies, they are starting to chemically grow toner particles so they can control the size and shape more consistently.

Toner cartridges come in many different prices. At times, toner cartridges can even be more expensive than the actual printer. This is rare though, and only happens with printers that were very cheap because of inferior quality. People who buy cheap printers instead of toner cartridges for a nicer printer are actually spending more money in the long run, as new printers come with cartridges that are only a third full. In order to truly save money in this industry, the consumer should buy compatible generic toner cartridges for a nicer printer.

There are very specific ways in which to clean toner cartridges. Cold water will wash away the toner and it can be harmful to skin but hot water will keep the toner in place while cleaning. A traditional vacuum cleaner should never be used to clean toner. Use an electrically conductive hose and a HEPA filter to clean spilt toner.
