VoIP Telephony Has Come Of Age

By Miguel Rivera

Technology changes almost daily and it can be hard to know which new trend to follow. However one you should not miss is VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol which is changing the way the world communicates. It is a part of the steady process of digitalizing the world and has taken the old analog phone system you are all familiar with and thrown it in the trash can.

By using the broadband connection you already have to browse the internet on your computer, you can now transmit voice as well as the data you are currently sending. You could do that for the last couple of decades, it is true, but there was no quality and it was a clumsy system. Now that has changed.

This type of communication system can be seamlessly connected to your exiting PABX or used in tandem with your home telephone line if you do not want to place all your eggs in the one basket. You can use your existing phones and switchboard through adapters or buy new. With some deals you might be able to get a free phone and/or router along with your package.

Perhaps the most important thing is cost. By some estimates you can save nearly half of your monthly phone bill by switching to VoIP. Since you are already paying for your broadband cable of DSL connection you will not have to pay for a separate phone line.

You may be thinking that this is not so new as you have been Skyping for several years. And of course it is basically the same system though with the popular Skype application most users have headphones and a microphone and talk to other people seated at their PC or laptop. With the latest VoIP it is no different from using a normal phone and the call recipient can be anywhere and using any kind of telephone at all.

If there were no disadvantages everyone would be using it. One problem can be electricity. To be 100% reliable you need a back-up supply otherwise you can be stuck without any connectivity during power outages. Secondly some systems did have a problem connecting to emergency services but this has largely been ironed out. Apart from that as long as you have a good broadband internet connection you should have no problem at all.

VoIP is a cheap and effective way to make phone calls. It is easy to install and operate. The changeover will be completed almost overnight.
